Getting to Fort Davis

Getting to Fort Davis, Texas

Getting to Fort Davis by Automobile
Fort Davis is at the intersection of two small US Highways, 118 and 17. US 118 goes northwest to meet Interstate 10 at Kent, and southeast to Alpine. US 17 goes northeast to meet Interstate 10 at Balmorhea and southwest to Marfa.

If you are driving from the west (El Paso and beyond) on Interstate 10:
  •  Take exit 176 at Kent and turn right to head south on US 118.
  •  Stay on US 118 for 52.6 miles until you reach Fort Davis. You will pass the McDonald Observatory and the Davis Mountains State Park on this route.

If you are driving from the east (San Antonio/Austin and beyond) on Interstate 10:
  •  Take exit 209 at Balmorhea and turn left underneath the Interstate onto US 17.
  •  Turn right towards Balmorhea where 17 meets the Interstate service road.
  •  Stay on US 17 for 6.5 miles, passing through Balmorhea and reaching Balmorhea State park at Toyahvale.
  •  Immediately after the State Park entrance, US 17 turns left for a 32.4-mile scenic mountain route to Fort Davis.

Driving from Interstate 20 (Midland/Odessa and beyond):

  •  Take Interstate 20 until it ends, merging with Interstate 10 West.
  •  Proceed west for 10 miles to exit 179 at Kent and turn left to head south on US 118 (See route #1 above).
NOTE: There is also the option to take US 17 south from Pecos to Balmorhea and follow route #2 above, but US 17 between Pecos and Balmorhea is a small road which sometimes has heavy oil-field truck traffic, which can make the drive less than pleasant.
